There's A Lion In The Yard

A man in New Mexico shaved his dog this way to scare away would be burglars.

This reminds me of the Jerry Clower bit.

Uncle Versie Ledbetter has shaved his collie for the summer, for fun he leaves a mane and bob on the end of the tail. Seeing the dog Versie's son Newgene went running through the house yelling....

There's a lion in the yard! A lion in the yard!

Later after being sent to his room for lying, Newgene is still convinced..

The lord spoke to me, and he thought it looked like a lion too.

State of the Union

I've been trying to give our new President a fair shake, after all, he did win by a large margin and many people wanted him to be chosen.

In what could be withstood last night, President intimating that those that oppose this health care reform are stuck on minor discrepancies and self-interest. I am about sick to death of listening to this pompous jerk.

And don't mistake anything, this proposal will lead to total governmental domination.
The Medicaid law includes statements that preclude government persons dictating care to doctors. That has been totally ignored, do you expect different in this situation?

There are pragmatic steps that should be addressed before health care is nationalized.

  1. Deregulate the insurance industry, allow them to compete on a national level. Business is motivated by economies of scale and potential monopolization. And unlike liberal dogma, corporate dominance can and does benefit the customers, e.g., Microsoft, Bell and Standard Oil. Who honestly thinks that the government is the mechanism built for extracting saving through economies of scale? Nobody. More so, under the government plan, tens of thousands of insurance workers will become unemployed, replaced with more costly federal government, unionized, employees.
  2. Tort reform. Sorry but Congress is dominated by lawyers and the Democrats have the ABA as a major contributor. The threat of malpractice suits, per the doctors and practitioners that I know, is more costly than the judgements themselves. Take your average urban hospital situation, emergency room are packed with non-paying customers who will sue at the drop of a needle. Doctors would be foolish not to expand testing and care service in an effort to remove the risk of a claim. The amount of care can be better focused.
  3. Change the pay system for insurance, let the patients be the customers of the insurance company. This will permit more job to job flexibility. This will make it in the insurance companies best interest to promote preventive care. There will have to some rules to prevent the companies from dropping coverage, given certain markers and obligations are met by the customer

This I started writing weeks ago and could not find the stomach to complete. Point 3 is not fully developed for it in some way requires government regulation and this should be avoided at all cost.

The health care workers that I know all felt like the undeniable path the federal government was taking was consolidation toward a single payer system, before Obama became president. Before is important, because this is where most politicians want to arrive, they are just going to baby step their way to to it by using the inertia of federal bureaucracy. I do not think we can stop it. Politicians are most predictable when they focus on the group of voters they judge to be as the group that will get them elected and keep them in power, they presume most stable citizens are already aligned and therefore taken for granted. By catering to the needs of this most needy fraction of voting society, that fraction receives the most attention and and the most unattached benefits.

Wayward Emu

More weird news from Mississippi. In the town of Forest Mississippi, Bird Bird had to be put down with a cattle prod.
Not exactly, but close, AP reports from WLBT-TV.
Miss. police use Taser, handcuffs on wayward emu

Officers had to use a stun gun and handcuffs to capture an emu running loose on Interstate 20 in central Mississippi on Sunday. Police Officer Kiley Culpepper told WLBT-TV in Jackson that motorists had been calling 911 since Friday to report sightings of two emus on I-20 and nearby U.S. Highway 80.

Authorities had been unable to find the animals until Sunday, when one was spotted near an I-20 entrance ramp.

The big bird was dodging traffic. Culpepper and deputies were able to surround the animal but has to use the Taser and handcuffs to finally get it off the road.

After being captured, the animal was taken to the Scott County Forest
Coliseum.

Can you imagine the frustration of the Mississippi State Trooper? He was trying corral this giant, agressive, bird, getting pissed off and just zapping the thing. The is bird is lucky that he wasn't shot, dead right there (DRT).

Wolfy the Retard

Last night I had a suspicion confirmed, Wolf Blitzer is retarded. The game show Jeopardy was having a celebrity charitable edition. By the time the final question came arrived, Wolfy was nearly $5000 in the hole. Being a charitable event, his slate was wiped clean and he was given $1000 to continue participation. For the Wolf-Miester, it must have been like working at CNN, get it wrong and you still get a prize.

Atlas Shrugged

This weekend I finally finished my re-read of this conservative classic.
Will not go into plot description of the epic book of nearly 1,200 pages.
Many hold this book up as a prophesy of liberal ascension.
I do agree that the books appraisal of liberal intent and practice the political equation is accurate. Today we are experiencing the liberal death by a thousand cuts, this a slow march toward establishing a reliance on government support, that in exchange for a relinquishment of personal rights. States rights are obliterated, as we just saw when the Federal government sued and won the right to force South Carolina to accept bailout money, that in exchange for commitment to Federal programs that the Governor of the state rejected.
Liberal intent, in my opinion, is two pronged. First you have the citizens who are driven by either personal greed (for handouts) or self loathing, anxious to promote growth in government scope. Second, you have the ruling class, a group eager to increase the scope of government for the sake of amassing power. Those in the second group are dishonest to those in the first. In this second group you have the Kerry's, the Kennedy's, the Rockefeller's and the Corzine's of the political elite, wealthy beyond imagination, earned by strong business practice, but for public consumption advocate only the needs of the poor. This many judge to be pandering for votes, insincere.
The books description of business practice is not so accurate, placing the greatest importance of the business success on the singular entrepreneur. The plot is centered on people that you would call giants of industry. Today the giants are corporate CEO's driven by profit margins and focused little on capital growth. Coupled with a ever growing governmental demand for taxes, there is little impetus for creative capital investment.
Much of the book is insightful and foreboding, a political treatise in a fictional mode.
The plot is fantastic, and in spite of the behemoth size, a fast read.

Not Unexpected

I took this little on-line quiz and was evaluated as conservative libertarian.
Before 9-11, I did consider myself to be a libertarian, but the public stance taken by party leaders was basically we got what we deserved because of our meddling in foreign affairs.
Harry Browne really pissed me off, so they stopped getting any of my money.
That is not to say the the libertarians were not true to their cause, they were, I just discovered that I was not one of them.

Little Johnny Knows American History

The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some American History. Who said 'Give me Liberty , or give me Death'?"

She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Little Johnny, a bright Navajo Indian boy, who had his hand up.

"'Patrick Henry, 1775," he said.

"Very good", said the teacher!

Who said, "Government of the People, by the People, for the People, shall not perish from the Earth?"

Again, no response except from Little Johnny, "Abraham Lincoln, 1863."

The teacher snapped at the class, "Class, you should be ashamed; Little Johnny knows more about history than you do."

She heard a loud whisper: "Screw the Indians."

"Who said that?" she demanded.

Little Johnny put his hand up, "General Custer, 1862."

At that point, a student in the back said, "I'm gonna puke."

The teacher glares around and asks, "All right! Now who said that!?"

Again, Little Johnny says, "George Bush to the Japanese Prime Minister, 1991."

Now furious, another student yells, "Oh yeah? Suck this!"

Little Johnny jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts to the teacher, "Bill Clinton, to Monica Lewinsky, 1997 !"

Now with almost mob hysteria someone said "You little shit. If you say anything else, I'll kill you."

Little Johnny frantically yells at the top of his voice, "Michael Jackson to the child witness testifying against him, 2004."

The teacher fainted.

And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, "Oh shit, we're screwed!"

Little Johnny said quietly, "The American people, November 4, 2008, Election of Barack Obama."
