I am pleased that the man is incarcerated. Being a 2nd Amendment advocate, I have a keen interest in "red flag" sections of the proposed federal gun control legislation. Since the 1980's when the focus of mental care shifted from traditional to external care, compounded with the evolution of patient rights, the government's ability to protect the public from mentally ill citizens has been ineffective.
I think that red flag laws are a reasonable notion as long as they address all forms of potential violence, include speedy due process for the accused and punishment for the abusers, whether they be private citizens or government apparatchiks.
All that said, if people do not cross the law, tragedies will not be averted.
That would include.
- Vehicular homicide.
- Homicide by explosive device.
- Homicide by stabbing or cutting.
- Homicide by firearm.
