Little David Scott voted against a stop gap government funding and against stalling new EPA air polution regulations.  The EPA regulations are known in particular to be agressively restrictive in my industry, the President has promised to Veto the bill if if gets to his desk. Will not matter because that bastard Reid will likely put the bill in a Senate drawer and refuse to offer for a vote.

50% Less Likely to Buy GM Because of Bailout

In 2006 -7 GM was rated a stock to BUY in a number of different research documents. Compared to the competing manufacturers, GM was considered an investment preferable to even those Japanese.
That all of it went to shit and I lost the whole nut.
My investment, my responsibility, my loss. No problem.
The common belief is that collapsed consumer confidence froze halted car sales, compounded by the poorly managed loan practices division were the causes that brought the giant to its sad end.
The inefficiency of union extorted pay for non-productive time is a problem that is universal to all of the unionized American manufacturers, so for the collapse I give the unions no blame. Ford, GM and Chysler all had the same for-shit supposed partner in industry.
The way the government came in and put the unions ahead of preferred creditors was an unconstitutional gifting of personal property to a union (socialist) organizations. The government acted in an extra-constitutional manner and there are nothing but faceless bureaucrats left to blame. There is no person to complain to. There is no personal or party to sue for recompense. We are left only with the power to vote out a President that has shown NO respect for the private property of those with which he is not aligned.
I do own a Chevrolet, a 1953 3600 pickup truck. A thing of beauty that smells like my grandfather's farm.
I will never, never, ever purchase a new GM vehicle.
I will never, never, ever purchase a used GM vehicle newer than a 2008 model.
When I make a commitment to boycott, it sticks, Exxon is a station I always pass.

This article speaks to me, though I am disappointed that the percentage is not much higher.

Fifty percent (50%) of American adults are less likely to buy a GM car because of the bailout. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds just four percent (4%) are more likely to buy from the company that critics refer to as Government Motors. Forty-two percent (42%) say the bailout has had no impact on their buying plans one way or the other.

Edge of Darkness

Being home sick has its benefits. Sat through this recent Mel Gibson (2010) feature this morning and for my part, was enjoyed.
This movie released in 2010 was directed by Martin Campbell, and written by William Monahan and Andrew Bovell.
Situated in Boston, the movie begins with the star's daughter coming home from work to visit her father. The young lady is spitting up blood and in short order is shot as she comes through the front door. The mother is long gone and not explained, so the bereaved detective puts all of his effort toward solving the case, and inside of that apply retribution. He for the most part achieves his goal, with the politicians taken care of by a man of similar skills and admiration for Thomas Craven.

Ray Winstone as Darius Jedburgh, Winstone is becoming popular out there, was excellent in another Boston film, The Departed.
The rest does not really matter.
With the personal issues that Gibson has endured or brought upon himself, however you look at it. These types of movies may be what we forever see from here out, an aging actor playing aging roles.
I enjoyed the movie in as much as in not feeling well, the act of determination was inspiring. If you don't like cop movies or Mel Gibson, skip it.

anathema

Some times at work I like to use words that challenge the reader's understanding.
Today that word was "anathema" used appropriately to describe a principle.
Not being so smart as the words I use, applied the ritualistic habit of looking in my dog eared Webster's New Work Dictionary, found the mark where I had looked up the word before.
The definitions are
1) a person or thing accursed or damned
2) anything greatly detested
3) a formal curse, as in excommunicating a person
4) any strong curse
For work the application was the first description, but while writing began to think of how two and three fitting for our POTUS.
Clinton, discounting the jism on the dress thing, and after the health care debacle was an effective president. A pig of a man who had the good sense to leave Greenspan in place and not fuck with the economy too much.
Bush following, like most Republicans, left the economy to itself, did attempt to correct the housing bubble issue but was resounding rejected by Congressional Democrats. When you add the Medicare prescription program he installed. I have the sense that W was a better Democrat than Clinton, but not his daddy.
Now we have the current President, a man who has the audacity to call a joint Congressional session for a speech that, like his Health Care Bill lacked details, while challenging republicans to accept this (his) necessary jobs bill. A week later the details are released and they include significant tax increases that he knows and anathema (description 1) to Republicans. What is obvious is that he has decided to set up is presidential campaign as a run against House Republicans, to reenact Harry Truman's whistle stop tour of the late forties. I suggest that the President is himself an ANATHEMA for having the gall to call a joint session to offer a purely political speech of no serious value. There is more an more evidence that Democrats are beginning to see the man in the light of decryption number three, a formal curse, as in excommunicating a person.

That what is being called the President's Deficit Reduction Plan, is not deficit reduction at all.
There is acknowledged increased spending.
The argument is over how that is going to be paid for.
You can not reduce a deficit when you apply a zero sum corrective action.
The politicians and media mouths on both sides are straining to criticize their opponents, when they are all supporting zero sum reduction.

He asks his Scottish caddy if he has noticed any obvious reasons for his poor tee shots, to which the caddy replies:

The King's Speech

The bride said she wanted to watch this movie, so I rented it, it sat on the counter for a month before I could get her to pay attention to it. When we started watching she gave up after 15 minutes. I who did not want to rent the thing in the first place was happily pleased.
Released in 2010, this movies is a biographical representation of King George VI ascendance to the throne. The screen play was written by David Seidler and action directed by Tom Hooper. Mr. Hooper also directed the mini-series about John Adams which I enjoyed very much.
The cast of this movie is as follows:
- Colin Firth as the King, Albert or "Bertie", younger brother to David.
- Helena Bonham Cater as the King's wife
- Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue, the speech therapist.
- Guy Pearce as King Edward VIII, David, Albert's older brother.
- Eve Best as Wallace Simpson, David's American lover for which he gave up the throne.
The plot, as far as I am aware follows the commonly held chain of events. Beginning with Albert's desire and efforts to overcome a stammering problem, seeks medical therapy. David, as the oldest brother, is first in line to assume the throne. Albert engages Lionel Logue an Australian speech therapist who learned his kraft working with shell shocked World War I soldiers. During the father's illness David is in a strong relationship with Wallace Simpson, a woman because of American birth is unsuitable for a monarch's wife. As history tells, King George V dies, leaving the throne to David, who chooses the name Edward VIII (I did not know they chose their own names). Wallace must have had some special skills because, David can disengage. While all of this is happening, Hitler is happening to the rest of Europe, the pressure is on the monarchy to lead. David's distractions are insurmountable. David abdicates making Albert King. The oncoming war obligates Albert to make public speeches which will unify and prepare the country for war. To prepare for the first of these important speeches Lionel coaches the King through his radio address using a see-saw speech pattern. The pauses required by the King to emit the words make the speech itself more effective. The speech succeeds and the friendship between King and Lionel cemented.
I enjoyed the movie a great deal, others must have as well because it won 4 Oscars, including Best Picture. Firth got Best Lead, Rush should have gotten Best Supporting.

He Had No Other Answer To Offer

It seems that more is being made of the press briefing exchange between Jake Tapper and Jay Carney than was said about the strong words by Jim Hoffa.
Because, as you might expect, I listen to conservative talk shows on the radio, I was aware of the speech that Teamsters representative James Hoffa gave. Hoffa's words are unpleasant but not offensive to me, these are the type of things people not officially connected to chain of authority say. On learning of the talk given shortly before POTUS's appearance, I was simply reminded of the double standard the left is accustomed to applying when addressing 'civility'.
Yesterday there was a press conference in which Jake Tapper put some pressure on Jay Carney to to admit that a double standard exists. The examples are numerous, brought to mind is the incident where during the last campaign McCain was pressured into a public apology for comments made about Obama.
In this situation we have a press secretary who has the expectation that the media will not press the issue on accepting responsibility for bad behaviour. When presented with the difficult situation Carney tried to shift the discussion to a jobs focus that most people in the room has substance taller than 'lets spend more money'.
While acknowledging there there is definite and vast double standard, I am inclined to agree Carney's tact. What the hell else was he going to say?  Some jerk said something stupid to whip up the crowd before the POTUS appeared, you can bet your ass that Hoffa won't be on the playbill in the future.
Further on the subject, I've started watching CNN and HLN a little bit more lately, they seem to have shifted a little closer to center.  Last night though I was watching Piers Morgan interview the president to the AFL-CIO, Richard Trumka.  That will be the last time I watch this fluffernutter, not one question about Hoffa's diatribe.

Field Park

Found this little tidbit in the news Friday.

On this day in 1858, the first special cigar bands were distributed at a dinner in New York City. The bands paid homage to Cyrus W. Field for his work in the laying of the Atlantic telegraph cable.

In my home town of Haddam, we lived next to a park that named for the man an family that had owned it. That would be the same Cyrus Field. As a young boys we played and explored there, climbed a tree that was grown from an acorn of fallen from Connecticut's famous Charter Oak. As an older boy we played there because it was a place you couldn't be seen.
As an adult I learned the origin of the park's name and the man's historical significance. Curious to me it has been, that we were not taught about our local connection to a giant of industry in the public schools of the town. My guess would be that most teachers were from other towns and unaware of the, albeit minor, historical significance. That is consequence of public education, history is forgotten.
The park was a lot of fun, thank you Mr. Field, someday hopefully far off, I want some of my ashes spread there.

People are getting tired of our leader talking down to citizens who disagree with his approach, talk down to politicians that have the audacity to ask for leadership.
DeMint has never been a shy one and here says what many feel...

“Frankly I am so tired of his speeches, it's going to be hard for me to watch,” said DeMint on CNN’s State of the Union. “We need a plan in writing, he needs to send it to us and tell us what it is going to cost so not only Congress and the American people can read it, businesses can read it.”

In the past the most comments I've ever gotten, were from an articulate liberal reader who characterized DeMint as pompous. Maybe so, but I agree with what he has to say.
