The Law (Loi)

This book was a Christmas gift and an amusing one at that.  One day at work a coworker gave me a copy of this book printed from a link at Neal Boortz's site.  That evening, in late November, I brought the stapled packet home and laid it on the counter top, planning to read on the throne. The bride told me that I could not read the book, without actually saying made clear that she had bought the same book as a Christmas present. When Christmas rolled around, the book was not under the tree, she had lost the darned thing.  Eventually the hard copy tuned up, and then eventually I read the book.

The Law, was written by Frédéric Bastiat, more accurately Claude Frédéric Bastiat, a Frenchman described as a classical liberal and political economist. The author lived from 1801 to 1850, dying at the age of 49 after contracting tuberculosis.

This book was published as a pamphlet in 1850. It describes in a series of short articles the conflicts and benefits of law, justice and liberty.  In this he makes clear that socialism is system within which the legislator promises unacheivable benefits to attain political power, then substitutes his caste system, the legislative for the rich, and asserts power over an misled constituency.  There is contempt for both socialism and communism.
Bastiat had a skill had writing quotable prose. These are some of my favorite....
“Everyone wants to live at the expense of the state. They forget that the state wants to live at the expense of everyone.”
and
“Often the masses are plundered and do not know it.”
This is a short book and I think very interesting in the respect that it was written 161 years ago and still puts the tail on the socialist donkey.

I keep getting these emails, all are interesting in their content. Each has its own personailized little tradgedy and reasoning for why law should not be applied.  Folks just want to work, sure, I get it.  Then come here and work legally, if not go home, I do not care what your damned problem is if you dance around legality and then expect me to help pay for a priviledge you do not have a birthright to.
Go home and keep your problems to yourself.

MegaVote: GA 13th, 5/31/2011

Representative Scott voted in a manner that was just fine in the last week.  The Patriot act vote pleases me in the sense that even liberals fools have to accept the designs set forth by the Bush administration.  The vote must have felt like a big fat bitter pill.  As for the President' immediate signature, we all remember how ofter an vociferously he and his party ripped the Patriot Act, now wearing the other shoe, pragmatism has taken root, even in such an infertile mind of our POTUS.
I really enjoyed is the complete rejection of the President's budget resolution, the vote went 0-97. Repudiation of slapped together resolution that was a delicate balance between vacant and stupid. What do you expect from a community organizer that never created his own legislation until he was President?

How did that work out?

Our Protectors

Forwarded email from a neighbor, I tried to follow the link without success. It is refreshing to see the opinion of a knowledgeable European rather than a typical visceral anti-American dogma. This is certainly a minority opinion, that even our President while he would rely on the fact, publicly would draw equivalence to the same forces this writer chooses to compare with.
French view American Military by Jean-Marc Liotier
American troops in Afghanistan through the eyes of a French OMLT infantryman
The US often hears echoes of worldwide hostility against the application of its foreign policy, but seldom are they reached by the voices of people who experience first hand how close we are to the USA.
In spite of contextual political differences and conflicting interests that generate friction, we do share the same fundamental values - and when push comes to shove that is what really counts.
Through the eyes of that French OMLT (Operational Mentoring Liaison Teams) infantryman you can see how strong the bond is on the ground. In contrast with the Americans, the French soldiers don't seem to write much online - or maybe the proportion is the same but we just have fewer people deployed. Whatever the reason, this is a rare and moving testimony which is why I decided to translate it into English, so that American people can catch a glimpse of the way European soldiers see them. Not much high philosophy here, just the first hand impressions of a soldier in contact - but that only makes it more authentic.
Here is link to the original French article if you want to double check.
http://omlt3-kdk3.over-blog.com/article-22935665.html_
and here is English translation :
"We have shared our daily life with two US units for quite a while - they are the first and fourth companies of a prestigious infantry battalion whose name I will withhold for the sake of military secrecy.
To the common man it is a unit just like any other. But we live with them and got to know them, and we henceforth know that we have the honor to live with one of the most renowned units of the US Army - one that the movies brought to the public as series showing "ordinary soldiers thrust into extraordinary events". Who are they, those soldiers from abroad, how is their daily life, and what support do they bring to the men of our OMLT every day? Few of them belong to the Easy Company, the one the TV series focuses on. This one nowadays is named Echo Company, and it has become the support company.
They have a very strong American accent - the language they speak seems to be not even English. How many times did I have to write down what I wanted to say rather than waste precious minutes trying various pronunciations of a seemingly common word? Whatever state they are from, no two accents are alike and they themselves admit that in some crisis situations they have difficulties understanding each other.
Heavily built, fed at the earliest age with Gatorade, proteins at places like Waffle House and McDonalds - they are all heads and shoulders taller than us and their muscles remind us of Rambo. Our frames are amusingly skinny to them - even the strongest of us - and because of that they often mistake us for Afghans.
Here we discover America as it is often depicted: their values are taken to their paroxysm, often amplified by the loneliness of this outpost in the middle of that Afghan valley. Honor, motherland - everything here reminds of that: the American flag floating in the wind above the outpost, just like the one on the postage parcels. Even if recruits often originate from the heart of American cities and gang territory, no one here has any goal other than to hold high and proud the star spangled banner.
Each man knows he can count on the support of their whole people who provide them through the mail all the things that an American could miss in such a remote front-line location: books, chewing gums, razorblades, Gatorade, toothpaste etc.
Every man is aware of how much the American people backs him in his difficult mission. And that is a first shock to our preconceptions: the American soldier is no individualist. The team, the group, the combat team are the focus of all his attention.
And they are impressive warriors! We have not come across bad ones, as strange at it may seem to you when you know how critical French people can be. Even if some of them are a bit on the heavy side, all of them provide us everyday with lessons in infantry know-how. Beyond the wearing of a combat kit that never seems to discomfort them (helmet strap, helmet, combat goggles, rifles etc.) the long hours of watch at the outpost never seem to annoy them in the slightest.
On the one square meter tower above the perimeter wall they stand the five consecutive hours in full battle rattle and night vision goggles on top, their sight focused in the directions of likely danger. No distractions, no pauses, they are like statues nights and days. At night, all movements are performed in the dark - only a handful of subdued red lights indicate the occasional presence of a soldier on the move. Same with the vehicles whose lights are covered - everything happens in pitch dark even filling the fuel tanks with the Japy pump.
And combat? If you have seen Rambo you have seen it all - always coming to the rescue when one of our teams gets in trouble, and always in the shortest delay. That is one of their tricks: they switch from T-shirt and sandals to combat ready in three minutes. Arriving in contact with the enemy, the way they fight is simple and disconcerting: they just charge! They disembark and assault in stride, they bomb first and ask questions later - which cuts any pussyfooting short.
(This is the main area where I'd like to comment. Anyone with a passing knowledge of Kipling knows the lines from Chant Pagan: 'If your officer's dead and the sergeants look white/remember its ruin to run from a fight. /So take open order, lie down, sit tight/And wait for supports like a soldier./ This, in fact, is the basic philosophy of both British and Continental soldiers. 'In the absence of orders, take a defensive position.' Indeed, virtually every army in the world.
The American soldier and Marine, however, are imbued from early in their training with the ethos: In the Absence of Orders: Attack! Where other forces, for good or ill, will wait for precise orders and plans to respond to an attack or any other 'incident', the American force will simply go counting on firepower and SOP to carry the day.
This is one of the great strengths of the American force in combat and it is something that even our closest allies, such as the Brits and Aussies (that latter being closer by the way) find repeatedly surprising. No wonder it surprises the hell out of our enemies!)
We seldom hear any harsh word, and from 5 AM onwards the camp chores are performed in beautiful order and always with excellent spirit. A passing American helicopter stops near a stranded vehicle just to check that everything is alright; an American combat team will rush to support ours before even knowing how dangerous the mission is - from what we have been given to witness, the American soldier is a beautiful and worthy heir to those who liberated France and Europe.
To those who bestow us with the honor of sharing their combat outposts and who everyday give proof of their military excellence, to those who pay the daily tribute of America's army's deployment on Afghan soil, to those we owed this article, ourselves hoping that we will always remain worthy of them and to always continue hearing them say that we are all the same band of brothers".

This Is The Best Way To Win

Georgia Tech has a good men's baseball team this year. This year they have tied their own season high 22 ACC wins.
But, they have already lost their first game in the ACC tournament so it's not looking good for the title.
Last night they did something really rare, winning in the top of the 15th inning, two outs, by stealing home.

California Prison Overcrowding

In light of the recent SCOTUS decision, Blackfive makes a simple comparison, with pictures, of prison overcrowding as compared to submarine crowding.

http://www.blackfive.net/main/2011/05/cruel-and-unusual-overcrowding.html

The submariners are volunteers for their country, the prisoners are living at the expense of their countrymen.

Pack them in like the rats they are, they broke the rules of society, they should not be able to make demands on it.

Historic Opportunity

"We face a historic opportunity. We have a chance to show that America values the dignity of a street vendor in Tunisia more than the raw power of the dictator. As Americans have been seared by hostage taking, violent rhetoric, and terrorist attacks that have killed thousands of our citizens, a failure to change our approach threatens a deepening spiral of division between the United States and Muslim communities."
Barack Obama

By different approach, our President means that would should soften and be more accommodating to Muslims. This ignores the fact that the party he us wishes to be accommodating to is entirely un-accommodating. I would agree that we should change our approach, but in the opposite direction, and be more like the Israelis.
* Drive SUVs, use up Arab oil, the sooner we move on from material dependency, the better.
* No Palestinian sovereignty without acknowledgement of Israeli sovereignty.
* Lie to us, and you will not be granted trust or accommodation.
* Fuck with us and you're going to be fucked.

Entitlement

"The poor have been used as human shields behind which the expanding welfare state can advance. The goal is not to keep the poor from starving but to create dependency, because dependency translates into votes for politicians who play Santa Claus. We have all heard the old saying about how giving a man a fish feeds him for a day, while teaching him to fish feeds him for a lifetime. Independence makes for a healthier society, but dependency is what gets votes for politicians. For politicians, giving a man a fish every day of his life is the way to keep getting his vote. 'Entitlement' is just a fancy word for dependency."

Obama's abandonment of America

Without evolving into a rant about the anti-colonial president, this article, forwarded to me by a neighbor, says well the path the president prefers. Beyond that I will say only that our president is a naive man, naive for not recognizing the source of wrong in the middle east, naive for thinking there were not be a diplomatic rebuke and naive for taking the advice of a CNN newsman.
This is bad.

Logic 101

Forwarded to me by RLS.  The deal with food stamps hits double, first the stamps are paid for with tax money. Then we have to waste time waiting on folks to argue about what can be bought with them in the check out line at the grocery store.  We are well familiar with folks that first have to separate out the covered items for food stamps and then the uncovered times to be paid for with cash.  The wads of cash I have seen whipped out in these situations make it clear that the folks either do not believe in banks and have their live savings in their pocket or they have dishonestly obtained government subsidy.

This was in the Waco Tribune Herald in Waco , TX on 4/25/11

Put me in charge of food stamps. I'd get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho's, just money for 50-pound bags of rice, corn meal and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, get a job.
Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, get a job.
Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your "home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried.. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, get a job and your own place.
In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the "common good."
Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.
If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.
AND while you are on Government subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes, that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Government welfare check. If you want to vote, get a job.

MegaVote: GA 13th, 5/16/2011

Apparently, Mr. Scott doesn't think that we should be working to increase the oil supply. In the end, a useless expression of the exectutive branch's will and a representative's lack of purposeful thought.
As for our Senators voting against closing debate on Obama's recess appointment to DOJ, bully.  The press isn't commenting, but the president did something here that W would have been crucified for.

Governor Deal Signs HB 87

The picture that the the Atlanta Journal Constitution shows is of a young man with a bullhorn protesting, this with a crowd of about 20 behind him.  The news industry will be playing up how this injures the poor "undocumented", but from what I can see in the picture resistance is weak, we have more to fear from the lawyers.
This is an issue where the minority has been too great of a voice, in effect placing friction in the legislative process, slowing a bill that addresses the practical application of laws already established.
Because the socialistic leanings of our government, enforcement of immigration laws has been undermined by businesses that employ cheap labor and politicians seeking a numerical base advantage.
This law goes to the root of the issue, making employment of illegal aliens difficult more costly.
I am glad that Governor Deal kept his promise by signing this into law.
Hope to see other states in the south do the same.

Glad They Are In Jail

I signed up for the updates from this DREAM ACTIVIST pro-immigration network, just to see what they are pitching.  Twenty year from now lets hope that I don't get caught up in some kind of McCarthyesque witch hunt intended to segregate those that opposed porous borders.
Anyway the story here is that four kids were arrested and jailed because they want to impress upon Indiana Governor Dainels the need to veto a bill that will preclude undocumented youth (aka illegal aliens) from receiving in-state tuition benefits.
So, the logic in this is that we have out-of state student that, say from Connecticut, that wants to attend the University of Indiana in Bloomington. He has to pay more than legal citizens of Indiana for the education he desires.  But, say that student walked across the border, trudging his feet through the Rio Grande, he should be given better fiscal opportunity than the student from Connecticut?
This situation illiuminates the reason the border should be closed and amnesty made impossible.  The people have come here for the subsidized things that Mexico does not have.  They want what we pay for.
The state is not even saying that the students cannot attend, which in itself could be argued as a form of sanctuary, itself an immoral abuse of citizen rights and taxpayer expense.  No, the state is just saying that they will have to pay the higher rate.

For that these bratty children are willing to go to jail.

Governor Daniels, please do not veto HB1402.

President Mawks Citizens

Our President in this video clip repeatedly refers to "they" with the purpose portraying illegal immigration activists as inconsistent in their demands. What he neglects to say is that "they" are citizens he is obliged to protect. What he also neglects is that the demands made are to first stop illegal imigration flow coming across the southern border of the nation, not some target number of agents. The flow has not stopped, the effort to guard the border has been diminished with bean bag type policy and ATF gun games.

Naturally Mr. President takes credit for what he and his cadre have accomplished, but in that ignores the effect of the states enacting laws like E-Verify in spite of his reproaches. He wants illegal immigrants to become Democratic voters, and he is willing to obstruct justice to accomplish that.

Take away the illegal hiring and and one of the lure is removed.

Take away the preversion of the 16th ammendment and another lure is removed.

For criticizing people who expect you to enforce the law, Mr. President, you get the Davis Cup, aka, Asshole of the Week.

Good Night, and Good Luck

This bloody DVD sat in my mail to read pile for about a month, then I spilled a glass of water on it, then I had to pry the envelope open.

But the wait was worth it.

This quiet little docu-drama of the relation ship between CBS and the McCarthy hearings was, allowing for the liberal leanings of the director-writer, George Clooney,an informative movie that can hold you theatrically.
Released in 2005, the movie is short at 93 minutes long.

The cast is strong with excellent supporting work.
  • Jeff Daniels as Sig Mickelson, the first director of CBS television news.
  • David Strathairn as Edward R. Murrow.
  • Tate Donovan as Jesse Zousmer
  • Patricia Clarkson as Shirley Wershba, producer and bride of Joe Wershba.
  • Robert Downey Jr. as Joe Wershba, producer, husband of Shirley Wershba and Pulitzer nominee.
  • George Clooney as Fred Friendly
  • Frank Langella as William Paley, CBS Chairman.

This movie is about the struggles surrounding the McCarthy Communism created trials. How the media sought to expose unethical persecution tact and how the government sought to control public perception of that.  CBS saw themselves as a protector or individual rights and with fear proceeded to expose actions they knew to be un-Constitutional. At career risk and personal expense the CBS news division made public evidence that eventually took the wind out of the Joseph McCarthy hearings.
The movie tends to stay away the the Democrat vs. Republican issue, which I appreciated. McCarthy himself was a Republican but he was supported by many Democrats and staffers which included Roy Cohn and Robert Kennedy.

On the whole I liked the movie and recommend that any patron of history watch.

School Paper

By a 15 year old school kid, who got an A+ for this entry.

Since the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord's Prayer are not allowed in most public schools anymore.
Because the word 'God' is mentioned.....
A student in Arizona wrote the attached NEW School prayer:

New Pledge of Allegiance"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.
Our hair can be purple, orange or green,
That's no offense; it's a freedom scene.
The law is specific, the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice.
For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all..
In silence alone we must meditate,
God's name is prohibited by the state.
We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks...
They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King.
It's 'inappropriate' to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such 'judgments' do not belong..
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles..
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take!
Amen
