A Painted House is a novel written by John Grisham, published in 2001 by Doubleday.
While John Grisham is no William Faulkner, he does invoke some of same traits of agricultural desperation. This is thoroughly enjoyable story, narrated by the 7 year old Luke, of life in Arkansas's cotton country.
Having totally missed its existence, this book was made into a movie starring Scott Glenn, who plays Luke's grandfather.
I do recommend the book for a light read, and a change of pace from the usually lawyerly centric stories by John Grisham.
Next up The Cardinal and the Kremlin.
