The man cannot catch a break, he compromises with Republicans and gets no bump in popularity from right, and on the flip side he gets new taxes, e.g. death, a continuance of an already established tax level and his own party wants to skin his hide.
We do see two things that are very evident in this adventure:
1) The Democrats in Congress want every bit of OUR money that they can get their hands on. All logic points to keeping money out of the government, that it is inefficient and wasteful, they want it anyway.
2) The President while rhetorically supporting the Democratic position, has no backbone for a fight with a strengthened opponent. This is different than when Health Care went through, then he had an overwhelming position of power, the main bitch was that he could not convince any of the Republicans to sign up and make it appear this was a bi-partisan bill.
