How effectively the 112th Congress will respond is unclear. No doubt true. I think what will happen will be that the President and House Democrats will very publicly offer legislation and programs that appeal to the center but contain poison pills that the Republicans will reflexively refuse. Then when the economy turns, the President can campaign on the improved economy and the benefits denied to the public by the ornery Republicans.
The House Republicans need to, for the next two years, and I would argue forever, ban earmarks, repeal national Health Care, revert to 2001 Social Security benefit package with levels adjusted inflation, defund the Department of Education and allow a non-political cost-benefit analysis of miltary spending. In the Senate, we may have to wait for two years and hope Murkowski gets run over by a bobsled. Maybe Voinavich outed by his whimpering boyfriend.
